My mother told me not to touch the dead crow
So I poked it with a stick
And then when she turned away
I jabbed a finger right into its gullet,
Reminding myself to wash my hands before eating again.
Naturally I forgot
Come on, she said, looking at me again
And I tried not to smile as I jammed my hands
Quickly back into my pockets
As though they’d never left.
